Civil Engineering Technician Apprentice

You will gain an insight into the Built Environment consultancy with a chance for you to explore your skills and interests across this important sector. You’ll work on real projects from day one, that offer scale and variety, collaborating with others and creating a meaningful impact on the world around us.

What you will do in your working day?

Within our I&E Group, you will be an integral part of a dynamic team dedicated to providing comprehensive environmental, infrastructure, and utilities consultancy services. This involves offering planning, design, procurement, and support to landowners and developers involved in significant commercial projects across the UK. The scope of our work spans some of the nation’s largest urban regeneration initiatives, garden villages, towns, and cities.

A key focus within the I&E Group is the specialised ‘Utilities’ discipline, where our team provides expert technical, commercial, and procurement advice. This encompasses the development of new water, energy, and utilities strategies, as well as the planning and execution of new infrastructure, connections, and modifications to existing overhead and underground utilities infrastructure. Our expertise covers a range of utilities, including water, sewerage, decentralised heat and energy networks, electricity, and telecommunications.

Our leaders, technical specialists, dedicated mentors, and a robust continuous learning and development framework will support your journey. The role is designed to cultivate your skills, enabling you to advise, consult, and negotiate with utility companies. You will gain proficiency in preparing drawings using AutoCAD, coordinating designs, and concurrently assessing risks and costs associated with new utilities connections, including network capacity issues. This hands-on experience will unfold across a diverse range of exciting projects.

Collaborating closely with utility undertakers and various energy services providers, you will be responsible for translating detailed designs into meticulously coordinated single and multi-utility work packages. These meticulously coordinated designs will undergo a value-engineering process before being presented to our developer and landowner clients.

In your role, you will capture clients’ unique needs through sketches, technical briefing papers, reports, presentations, and other formats. You may take ownership of less complex projects while supporting Senior and Associate level Engineers and Consultants on larger projects. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to engage with landowners, commercial/residential developers, and their agents, gaining insights into their planning and development needs. Your role will extend to preparing and presenting proposals that align with these identified needs.

A crucial aspect of your role involves staying abreast of technological advancements and digital design tools. Hilson Moran, being a digital design practice, emphasises the use of technology in various aspects of the consultancy process. You will develop your skills primarily in AutoCAD (with Revit being employed in major building projects) and Bluebeam. We encourage a creative approach to communication, allowing you to express technical solutions innovatively. This role presents a unique opportunity for you to understand and acquire digital skills, contributing to the ongoing effort to harness technology in novel ways within our practice.
