Local collaboration enhances designs at Al Thumama Stadium

Hilson Moran’s Qatar office has led the MEP, Sustainability and CFD implementation at Qatar’s 2022 FIFA World Cup venue, Al Thumama Stadium. As lead engineering consultancy, Hilson Moran has worked closely with local consultants AEB and JV AlJaber Engineering Company & Tekfen Construction to help deliver the Supreme Committee’s Delivery and Legacy Vision.

Hilson Moran’s in-house capabilities and liaison with local consortiums have been essential to the design of the Al Thumama Stadium. Regional Director Matt Kitson comments on the partnerships formed: “This joint venture has enabled us to create the sustainable and environmentally progressive infrastructure that makes the Al Thumama stadium world class. Our in-house CFD and BIM services have been instrumental in the stadium’s overall design and pushed the limits in engineering in order to deliver the optimum player and spectator standards”.

Hilson Moran also advised on the stadium’s vertical transportation and acoustics. International Commercial Director Tony Morris says:

“We are proud to have acted as lead engineer on the Al Thumama Stadium. It has been an opportunity for us to showcase our full services and advancements in engineering, as well as being part of Qatar’s history and future sporting legacy”.

The Al Thumama Stadium will seat up to 40,000 people within the quarter-final stage of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Modelled on the gahfiya – a traditional head piece worn by Arab men– the circular stadium has been designed by Qatari architect Ibrahim M Jaidah. Post-tournament it will continue its legacy, housing a number of amenities, including a boutique hotel and branch of Aspetar Sports Clinic.
