Our London and Farnborough teams recently played host to welcome our young and aspiring professionals from across Hilson Moran and AKT II to our widely attended ‘Young Person’s Forum’.
Held once a quarter, the forums are designed to provide a platform for networking, learning, engaging and inspiring our rising stars from across all areas of the business…Not just our engineers. They also provide a safe space for voicing any feedback on the business and raising concerns or queries about working practices.
Each session the group are challenged to present their design ideas looking at buildings of their choosing, identifying ways to make design engineering improvements. The groups also get the opportunity to learn from other disciplines across the business such as finance, HR and marketing and specialist design groups such as security and acoustics to gain broader perspectives of the business and engineering divisions.
This session the group were joined by Paul Scott, Director at AKT II who shared his experiences leading the design of the award winning White Collar Factory in Old Street. Then followed a talk with Simon Giles, Managing Director of Tyrens UK who provided the group with invaluable insight into aspects of his career. Highlighting the importance of developing 1, 5, and 10 year career plans and the value in building strong working relationships in business and making yourself indispensable.
A fun challenge then saw teams working together to build various pre-determined structures out of cups using only strings to position them correctly. With no hands allowed on the cups, it was down to pure team work and patience to complete each structure.
