with it associated changes to the local environment. It is therefore important to ascertain the potential impact the building will have both on the immediate and surrounding area.

The presence of any new building will change the wind behaviour. The use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can predict the degree of change caused. Here the proposed building together with local surrounding buildings are modelled and studied under various wind speed and direction scenarios. The results from these demonstrate under a number of activity classifications whether pedestrian comfort is likely to be any worse than the existing development. This can then be assessed and design solutions developed to prevent pedestrian discomfort caused by excessive wind speeds arising from the new buildings.

Pedestrian comfort analysis can aid planning application and in certain cases is specified by local authorities.
