SPOTLIGHT PROJECTS
| QUEENSMERE SHOPPING CENTRE, SLOUGH (HAMMERSON) |
 |
The Practice was appointed by Hammerson Plc to refurbish the Malls and Central Plaza and to create new retail space at their Shopping Centre in Slough.
Previously the building had been serviced from a central district heating system, and nine plantrooms positioned at service deck level above the main Mall. Each plantroom consisted of an air handling unit, a chiller and a Local Authority electrical sub-station mainly required to provide air conditioning to the malls.
The refurbishment brief was to substantially reduce energy consumption and hence service charges by providing natural ventilation to the Malls and Central Plaza achieved by reconfiguring the roof to a higher level than the existing with automatic openings to exploit the stack effect within the space.
The new openings, which doubled as smoke vents, were controlled from a central controller to open or close in conjunction with automatic doors to maintain an internal temperature, which responded to the external ambient conditions.
The Architect was EPR Architects Ltd.
