20 Fenchurch Street is set to become a major London landmark. This 36-storey tower with its unique, gently undulating façade will provide over 59,000 sq m of premier office space, with retail at ground level and a stunning public sky garden at the top with a 360-degree panoramic view over the city.
The building’s innovative façade incorporates external shading which has been cleverly designed using the most sophisticated performance modelling techniques to reduce solar gain dramatically, while maximising natural daylight to occupied spaces and cutting the building’s carbon footprint significantly. Using extensive thermal and computational fluid dynamic modelling techniques, the sky garden has been designed as a naturally ventilated space to minimise the energy required.
The scheme also includes a low carbon tri-generation plant that has a 300kWe fuel cell combined with absorption chillers serving building primary loads. Photovoltaic cells integrated into the roof of the sky garden also contribute to the low carbon footprint of the development. We designed the systems so that they can be connected to a city-wide heating and cooling network in the future.
