Jim Hilson and Peter Moran established Hilson Moran in 1977, with the aim of providing a higher quality of consultancy service than they had experienced while pursuing their early careers within major contracting organisations. During the early years the company was based in Fleet, Hampshire and the workload was predominantly overseas.

In 1983, Chris Plummer joined the practice, and subsequently became the third Director. He became Managing Director in 2006. An office in London was opened in 1988. Head Office was based in Farnborough in 1989, and 1990 saw the opening of a third office in Manchester.

In 1998, Hilson Moran established a Facilities Management group to assist its clients in the management and operation their premises. This business sector has continued to thrive and has established an excellent reputation with a large number of clients.

The year 2000 saw Hilson Moran establish an Environmental Modelling group to apply state-of-the-art computer modelling techniques to the design of buildings. A further step in the evolution of the company was the formation of an Energy and Sustainability team in 2002.

In 2007, these two teams were brought together to form a wider Sustainability group. As the world has become more conscious of the global effects of carbon emissions and energy consumption, a raft of new legislation has been introduced and our Sustainability team continually researches and tracks these developments so that we can offer our clients the latest expert advice in the field.

In recent years Hilson Moran has steadily increased the scope of its services to deliver comprehensive design solutions. A Light & Visual Environments team was established in 2005, Acoustics in 2007 and Structural Engineering and Fire Engineering groups were both introduced at the start of 2008.

In 2002, Hilson Moran became part of a major European organisation, Altran. This is one of the largest engineering consultancy groups worldwide, employing 16,000 engineers in 20 countries and has assisted Hilson Moran in expanding its operations overseas.

We opened our office in Abu Dhabi in the UAE in 2006, acquired our Italian office in Milan in 2007 and opened an office in Paris in 2009.

Quality has always been of paramount importance to Hilson Moran, both in terms of service provided to clients and technical capability and particular attention has always been given to staff development. The company was one of the first firms in its field to be Quality Assured in 1992, and our company-wide management system is certified in accordance with the requirements of ISO 9001:2008.

In 2001, Hilson Moran became one of the first companies in its sector to be certified as an Investors in People organisation, in recognition of our commitment to the continued development of our staff.

The Hilson Moran Academy was launched in 2009 to share best practice across the organisation. The Academy brings together existing and new training and development activities into a single, coordinated framework.
